"The Train's Comin'"
2 of 3We visited the places, from Montana to Texas, California to Puerto Rico, hit hard by the extreme weather of 2017, to share the experiences and long-lasting impacts on those affected.
Unfortunately, as scientists anticipated, 2017 was not a one-off. Since keeping such records, the U.S. has incurred over $150 billion in annual, inflation-adjusted damages from weather disasters (costing over $1B) in only six years. All six have occurred since 2005, with three of those since 2017. However, it appears that following 2024, reporting of this data is now being squelched. The following notice explains:
"In alignment with evolving priorities, statutory mandates, and staffing changes, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will no longer be updating the Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters product."
